The Galaxy Grand is Samsung’s attempt to woo those who can’t afford a top-end device like the Galaxy Note II.

  1. price 21,500

Which is almost twice as expensive as its low-cost rivals, but it’s the most-affordable option if you’re looking for a device from a tier 1 brand. Currently, the Galaxy Grand doesn't face any competition from other tier 1 brands, but you may want to know how much better it is than the low-cost devices that offer similar specifications. Here’s a breakdown of the specifications to give you an idea how it compares with the closest competition.

1x1.trans Samsung Galaxy Grand Review
A large-screen handset for those who can’t afford the Galaxy Note II

OS – Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Very few current-generation low-cost Android phablets come preloaded with Android Jelly Bean; most of them come with Android ICS—however, you get the OS in the stock form. The Galaxy Grand runs Jelly Bean out of the box and not to mention, it boasts features found in the higher-end Galaxy handsets, such as Smart Stay, Pop up Play and Direct Call.

Cellular network – Dual SIM GSM and 3G networking

The Galaxy Grand is the first Samsung galaxy grand review from a tier 1 brand to offer dual-SIM capability in the sub-Rs 20,000 price band. Quad-band 2G is supported by both the SIM card slots, whereas 3G connectivity is supported only in the SIM1 slot.

Display – 5-inch WVGA

An HD display would have made the Galaxy Grand a killer deal, but unfortunately, it sports a 5-inch WVGA display that has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. On the other hand, you have the Micromax Canvas HD with a 720p IPS LCD. The pixel density of Galaxy Grand’s display is 187 ppi as against 294 ppi in the Canvas HD—that’s a difference of a good 107 ppi or 57 percent in density! That doesn’t mean it’s bad; there’s ample real estate for viewing web pages and documents comfortably and videos are enjoyable on the large 5-inch display.

1x1.trans Samsung Galaxy Grand Review
Quite slim at 9.6 mm

Form factor and weight – a tad lighter than the Note II samsung mobi

Weighing in at 160 grams, Galaxy Grand is 20 grams lighter than Note II. It’s also a few millimetres less in height and width, but the Note II is slimmer than the Grand by a fraction of a millimetre.

Wi-Fi – Dual-band, 802.11 ‘n’

Like the Nokia Lumia 620, the Galaxy Grand is one of the few handsets in its segment to feature dual-band Wi-Fi ‘n’. So, if your router supports 5GHz wireless band, you can harness much faster connectivity.

This is grey area and we shall be able to give a clear picture only when we get our hands on the device. We got in touch with Samsung for exact details of the SoC this device uses, but we didn’t get any answer. For now, we can only say it’s powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. According to one source who captured a glimpse of the Galaxy Grand at the Broadcom booth at the CES 2013, it’s quite evident that it’s powered by the Broadcom BCM28155 SoC. It comprises a pair of ARM Cortex-A9 cores and Broadcom’s own VideoCore-IV graphics engine for 2D and 3D acceleration.

Storage – 8GB with the option to expand by up to 64GB

Here, Galaxy Grand has an upper hand over Micromax Canvas HD. Firstly, Galaxy Grand packs 8GB of built-in storage, which is twice as much as in Canvas HD. And secondly, in contrast to microSD expansion of up to 32GB in Canvas HD, Galaxy Grand can take up to a 64GB microSD card.

1x1.trans Samsung Galaxy Grand Review
8 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash

Primary camera – 8MP with LED flash

The 8MP primary camera featured in the Galaxy Grand has the same resolution as the one featured in Note II. There’s LED flash and digital image stabilisation to help you take clear shots in low light. Videos can be recorded at 1080p at 30fps. The Canvas HD too features an 8MP camera with LED flash, but only our hands-on tests will reveal which of the two takes better photos. Also, the secondary front camera in the Galaxy Grand is a 2MP one as against the VGA camera in the Canvas HD.

Sensors – Gyro, compass and more

The Galaxy Grand comes armed with sensors that will be of most use to the end user—accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass. The list excludes barometer, but it’s fair for an entry-level phablet.

Battery – Li-ion 2100mAh

Both, the Galaxy Grand and Canvas HD feature a hefty 2100 Li-ion mAh battery to provide decent amount of talk time in addition to fuelling other tasks such as media playback, web browsing, gaming and so on. The Note II packs a 3100 mAh battery and it lasted for over two days without the need for a charge. Test revealed it played a 720p video in loop for over 12 hours without any hiccup.

The bottom line

Off late, we’ve seen many low-cost Android phablets (such as Micromax Canvas 2 and Lava Iris 501) featuring a dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage and at least a 5 megapixel camera—you can buy one for around Rs 11,000. Cough up another few thousand rupees and you can buy a more feature rich device like the Canvas HD. However, if you’re reluctant to consider a lower-tier brand and don’t want to look beyond top-tier brands, the Galaxy Grand is for you. The specifications look good on paper, and the price point is sweet!

Samsung’s first tablet has received a rapturous welcome from the media following its unveiling this week. Largely, the reviewers are suggesting the Galaxy Tab could be a genuine rival for Apple’s iPad, but it’s yet to be seen if it will become the new “apple” of our eyes (sorry).

First of all, let’s take a quick look at what the Galaxy Tab has to offer. Powered by Android Operating System 2.2, it features a 7” TFT-LCD display and weighs a mere 380g.  The Galaxy Tab supports the latest Adobe Flash Player 10.1, has 3G HSPA connectivity, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 3.0. A Cortex A8 1.0GHz application processor delivers high performance, while the Tab supports HD video content with several multimedia formats and has front and rear-facing cameras. Pretty impressive on paper then.
The Galaxy Tab could be “the iPad killer”, says The Sun; in typically staid style. The newspaper praises the Galaxy Tab’s “pin-sharp graphics” adding, “The Galaxy Tab’s trump card is the built-in phone, which the iPad lacks. It also has a camera, unlike the iPad.”
PC World’s business blog agrees that the Galaxy Tab could be “the first tablet worthy of challenging the Apple iPad”. The Tab “has most – if not all – of the features that many wanted to see on the Apple iPad, like front and rear-facing cameras, expandable memory through an SD memory card slot and a multitasking OS,” it says – but adds that due to the massive variety of Android smartphone hardware available, “some apps may not transition well to a tablet-sized display”, although this is also a problem shared by the iPad.
The Guardian commends the Tab’s unique e-reading application, “Reader’s Hub”, as well as the film and video “Media Hub”. “Allowing access to books, music and films is a major step forward as it ratchets up its competitive positioning against Apple,” it says. “Success will depend on pricing,” it adds.
The Huffing ton Post was also won over by the Tab.  “I was a little skeptical about the idea of a 7-inch tablet yet I found that there was enough screen real estate to happily browse the web,” said the reviewer, who praised the facility to make video calls via 3G rather than just WiFi. However, like PC World, the Huffing ton Post points out that the scale of some Android apps could pose problems on the Galaxy Tab display.
All in all, the majority of reviewers suggest the Galaxy Tab could have the edge over the iPad, particularly if it is competitively priced and issues with the size of apps can be ironed out.

The Karbonn had released so many smart phones, in fact karbonn is the first to release an low priced android phone some years ago. Fingers to point on
The Display was really poor
Very old version when compared to the recent changes
Battery was not good, it should be updated

4) XOLO A800

The Xolo A800 is the Lava brand but it supports the customers with their innovative and useful technology, i personally believe they have some fantastic chances to develop into an good manufacturing company

Sony's mantle as one of the major smartphone manufacturers has slipped a little in recent years, but it still produces some outstanding handsets. The X peria Z is just such a creature, with a powerful quad-core processor, 13-megapixel camera,4g and a feast of extras.

It's on sale now for around £450.

The price puts it in the high-end category, but the spec more than justifies it. This is a handset for high-flyers and phone fans who like to be ahead of the curve and are prepared to pay for it.

The Xperia Z also makes a virtue of being a tough cookie; it's scratch resistant and shatterproof, as well as being water resistant
Design
The Xperia Z is not what you'd call a 'convenient' handset though, with a five-inch screen it's a big ol' handful measuring 139x71x8mm. With shatter-proof glass both back and front it's no lightweight either, tipping the scales at 146g. Around the sides is a single large power/sleep button, a wafer-thin volume rocker and dock connectors. Everything else is hidden behind sealed plastic grommets, including micro SD and SIM card slots, micro USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Xperia Z also makes a virtue of being a tough cookie; it's a rugged phone in a smoothie body. It might be covered in glass, but it's scratch resistant and shatterproof, as well as being water resistant (much like the Xperia Tablet Z). We were able to douse it under the tap and leave it in a filled sink for a couple of minutes with no apparent ill effects -- so it should be able to cope with the general perils of the urban jungle. Sony makes no promises for deserts or mountains but for most day-to-day attacks it should be fine.

It's beautifully sensitive, responding instantly and accurately to every brush and press

Sony
Features
That "Reality Screen" is rather lovely though. With a pixel resolution of 1,920x1,080 that boils down to 441 pixels-per-inch (way ahead of the iPhone 5's 326, for instance) and 16 million colors it looks stunning, and it's beautifully sensitive too, responding instantly and accurately to every brush and press -- something you can't always say even for high-end handsets. It has the latest Sony Mobile Bra via Engine to help smooth out video play and we certainly couldn't detect any awkwardness in any of the movies we played.

For such a forward-thinking handset it's a surprise to see the 4.1 version of Android Jelly Bean rather than the very latest 4.2, for which we'll have to wait a little longer. It's not a disaster by any means -- you still get the intuitive Google Now service that punts info at you based on your location and previous choices without the need to search, but it does take the shine off the newness of it a little.

Sony's put its own skin over the top of Android of course, notably with a lock screen that looks like rippling Venetian blinds when you run your thumb over it, and its own distinctive array of shortcut icons and widgets. The unloved Timescape, which pulled together your social networking updates has been removed entirely though, unable to compete with Google's own alerts bar.

Performance
The Xperia Z has 4G LTE capability though you'll need a contract with EE to take full advantage of it (or hold your breath for other networks getting all their 4G ducks in a row later this year). The 1.5GHz quad-core processor is one of the heftiest beasts we've yet seen on a smartphone, and backed by a full 2GB RAM it's a very powerful engine. Our regular An Tutu performance benchmark test delivered a score of 18,440 -- that's the highest we've yet seen on a handset, defeating quad-core rivals like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (13,619), HT C One X+ (16,157) and Google Nexus 4 (17,903), though the last one at least has the distinction of costing around half as much. In short, this is the fastest smartphone we have ever reviewed.

Sony Xperia Z test shot Dave Olive
But whether you're doing 3D gaming, watching a movie or even just listening to music, the Xperia Z does seem to get uncomfortably hot during prolonged use. Battery life isn't great either, and we barely got a full day's steady use out of it with the standard settings. There is however Stamina Mode, which powers down all the phone's functions when the screen goes dim. Good for the battery, but not always so good for communication, though you can customize the settings to leave certain functions on, depending on what you need doing.

Sony
Camera quality
Considering the power of the processor, it's a bit of a surprise that the 13.1-megapixel camera takes a good two seconds to start up. Not great for speedy snaps, but once it's up and running, it's a bit of a cracker. As well as Sony's Emory R sensor, designed to improve the quality of pics taken in low light, features include touch-to-focus, face detection, image stabilization, high dynamic range (HDR) automation, sweep panorama and GPS go-tagging. All of that would matter naught if picture quality was sub par, but thankfully, it isn't; picture quality is really very good, even in low light, with sharp edges and realistic colors.

Camera picture quality is really very good, even in low light, with sharp edges and realistic colors
Video quality is up there too, with full HD 1,080p recording at 30fps. Unusually, the HDR setting is also available for video as well as stills, which can add an interesting, other-worldly look to your vids.

NFC and connectivity
Near-field communication (NFC) is on board for wireless payments (when you can find a place that accepts them) and for instant settings changes using Sony Smart Tags, though none seemed to be included in the box. Sony has obviously been thinking about the technology too, and it will work with the latest Sony Bra via TVs -- touch your phone to the TV, and it can be set to mirror what's on the phone wireless. If you don't have one of the latest Bravuras, your options are more limited, since there's no HUMID port to run HD video direct to your TV.

There's 16GB of memory on board, which offers an adequate bit of room for HF pics and vids, but if you need more, it can carry micro SD cards up to 32GB in size.
